Carlsbad, Calif.- David Timmins and Owen Avrit were tied at 8-under as they approached the 18th tee on Thursday. Avrit was coming off a birdie on 17 but pushed his second shot into the penalty area right of 18 while Timmins was just off the green in two shots and would go on to birdie the hole, winning the GCAA Summer Series at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, presented by the John T. Reis Foundation.
“Hats off to Owen. He played his heart out. It was really fun being out there with him and competing…he played awesome. This is what we live for. We live for moments like this, to feel pressure and come down the stretch,” Timmins said following his round.
Despite shooting 2-over on the front-nine on Thursday, Timmins bounced back nicely on the back-nine, shooting a 2-under 34. He nailed back-to-back 10+ ft putts to save par on holes 15 and 16.
“Holy cow! I made em’ when I had to. Not the best day, ball striking or putting, but it is ok. This (the trophy) is what matters,” said Timmins.
Timmins got the opportunity to play with his fellow BYU teammate, Brock Goyen, on Thursday in the final pairing.
“Go Cougs! Awesome showing from us (BYU). Really, really proud of Brock. I think it speaks a lot for us going into the season. We’ve been working hard this summer and we are expecting big things this year. We are excited,” Timmins said.
The final event of the GCAA Summer Series tees off next week, August 3-5, at Penn State (Blue Course).
